US President Donald Trump is considering banning the Chinese technology company Alibaba in the US. He said this during a press conference on Saturday at his Bedminster golf club.
Trump’s threat comes after the Chinese parent company of the popular TikTok video app, ByteDance, was ordered on Friday to sell its American operations within ninety days. Otherwise, a ban would also be planned for TikTok. According to American politicians, the app is collecting too much data from its users and it could simply fall into the hands of the Chinese government, they think.
The president was asked during a press conference on Saturday whether the US also wanted to ban other Chinese companies such as the online store Alibaba. “We’re looking at other things, yes,” he said, according to Reuters news agency.
Trump has made US-China trade relations one of the main themes of his presidency. He is generally critical of the Asian country, but on Saturday praised China’s purchases of agricultural products from the US, on which the two countries reached an agreement late last year.
