The top conductor Jaap van Zweden, head of the New York Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, will celebrate his 60th birthday on Saturday in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
The NTR Saturday Matinee program presents the Amsterdam-born maestro there with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Groot Omroepkoor in a performance of Beethoven’s opera Fidelio. The concert performance will be played from 2.15 p.m. in the Grote Zaal on Radio NPO Radio 4. The entire concert will be broadcast again on the television NPO 2 on Sunday evening from 7.10 p.m.
Fidelio or Marital Love is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven. The first performance took place in Vienna in 1805. Beethoven was born this month 250 years ago. Originally, however, Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung was considered for his birthday, which is not possible according to the current corona rules. There are even rules for taking the stage.
The Corona restrictions also mean that Van Sweden will only experience the concert with musicians and technicians, family and friends from the birthday child cannot be there either.
