The turn of the year passed in the north of the country without disasters. On New Year’s Eve and in the hours after midnight, the fire brigade and police in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe had to report several times.

A spokesman for the Fryslân security region speaks of a “fairly quiet evening”. On New Year’s Eve there were fires outdoors in Drachten, Heerenveen, Marrum, Kollum and Kollumerzwaag, among others. For example, cars, trailers and a container went up in flames.

In Kollumerzwaag, the fire brigade would have been pelted with fireworks when it was extinguished, and the police had to act, writes the Leeuwarder Courant. According to the newspaper, there were also disturbances in the center of Leeuwarden at night. In addition, heavy fireworks would have been thrown at officers. In Joure, the windows of a hotel were destroyed because a carbide cannon had been fired.

In Groningen there were some outdoor fires in Groningen, Hoogezand and Leek, among others. According to Dagblad van het Noorden, a network operator’s cabinet in Westerlee was blown up with fireworks. In Drenthe, the fire brigade took action in Emmen and Assen, among others. Just like in Friesland, both security regions speak of a relatively quiet festival without excesses, which is comparable to previous changes of the year.
