President Donald Trump said in March that the government would have done very well if the total number of corona deaths in his country could be capped at 100,000 or 200,000. In the country of almost 330 million people, 100,000 people had died of Covid-19 by the end of May.
The global death toll from the virus has risen to nearly 966,000, according to the University of Baltimore. Brazil (more than 137,000), India (nearly 89,000) and Mexico (nearly 74,000) follow the US leader.
More than 6.8 million infections have been diagnosed in the United States, putting the country ahead of India and Brazil. Russia is by far in fourth place.
