A petition to accommodate five hundred unaccompanied refugee children from Greece in the Netherlands has been signed by 100,000 Dutch, the Dutch Refugee Council reported on Friday. “The Netherlands shows that there is a lot of support to help vulnerable children in need as quickly as possible,” explains the organization.
The Dutch Council on Refugees, Defense for Children and the Refugee Foundation launched petition 500 for children a few months ago after Greece asked the Netherlands to accept 2,500 single children. Last week the devastating fire broke out in Camp Moria on Lesbos, leaving 13,000 asylum seekers homeless overnight.
According to the Dutch Refugee Council, 170 municipalities and five provinces are also behind the idea of bringing these single children to the Netherlands. According to the organization, Germany takes 2,500 refugees at risk and Belgium 100 to 150.
