NS and GVB concerned about the plan to remove the Amsterdam police inland

“Mayor Halsema obviously still has to get used to the fact that Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city that also includes a safe transport hub. Having your own police station is an absolute necessity, ”said the union.

Capacity bottleneck

The reason for the withdrawal of officers from the so-called Safety Team Public Transport (VOV) at CS is the lack of capacity at the police. The mayor and the city council want to use the officers in the base teams.

Incidents Increase

The transport companies assume that the number of travelers – which is currently limited due to the corona virus – will increase again. And precisely because of the corona, according to NS and GVB, the number of incidents has increased. They also relate to the role of the police in the 2018 terrorist attack on the station that stabbed two American tourists. The perpetrator was shot dead by a police officer. Companies also fear that police operations without specific knowledge of public transport will lead to ever greater disruption to public transport.

The NS and the GVB want to keep the current way of working and ask the council members to stand up for it. The council will discuss this with the mayor on Thursday.
