McAfee software pioneer arrested for tax evasion

British-American software pioneer John McAfee was arrested in Spain for tax evasion. The US Department of Justice has announced this.

McAfee, 75, is accused of failing to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018 and withholding assets such as real estate, a yacht and a car. The charges were made public after his arrest. He is being held until he is extradited, the ministry said.

According to prosecutors, McAfee made millions of dollars promoting crypto coins, giving lectures, advising on assignments and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary film. He didn’t pay any taxes on it. He can sit in prison for up to five years if convicted of tax evasion.

It’s by no means the first time the antivirus developer has been discredited. In August, McAfee was still short arrested for wearing a thong as a mouth mask.
