MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, has donated 1.7 billion dollars (about 1.4 billion euros) to charity. These include historically black universities in the United States, climate groups, and health organizations.
Scott is the second richest woman in the world with a fortune of 53 billion euros. Shortly after her divorce from Bezos last year, she announced that she was joining “Giving Plegt,” a campaign by billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates in which the rich promise to donate most of their wealth to charity before their deaths. In a post on Twitter, Scott now says she has put this intention into practice “because she experienced the first half of 2020 with a mixture of heartache and horror and wants to draw attention to the charities involved.”
This is €500 million for anti-racism organisations and €340 million for social mobility groups. The remaining millions go to charities fighting for gender equality and development aid. “There is no doubt that a person’s personal wealth is the product of a collective effort and social structures that give some people opportunities and hinder countless others,” Scott said.
Her former husband, the richest man in the world, has often come under fire in the past for giving little money to charities. Bezos announced this year that he would spend 10 billion dollars on the fight against climate change and 100 million dollars on the fight against hunger in Africa.
