The US is taking the first steps against the Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat, which allegedly share user data with the Chinese government. Both apps will be banned from the app stores from Sunday, the US Department of Commerce announced on Friday.

In particular, it is prohibited to distribute the TikTok video app and the WeChat chat app via app stores in the USA. This also applies to updates to the apps. WeChat is also no longer allowed to process payments in the USA. According to the US government, the apps collect too much data about users that they share with the Chinese government. As a result, they pose a threat to US national security.

“In appointing President Donald Trump, we took significant steps to combat China’s malicious collection of personal information from US citizens,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross in a press release. This proves once again that “the President will do everything possible to ensure national security and protect Americans from threats from the Chinese Communist Party.”

Trump has long threatened to ban the apps in the US unless they sell their US division. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has reached agreements with US software company Oracle on this, but that deal – which wouldn’t be a full sale – would not be enough for the US government. TikTok now has until November 12th to resolve it. Then the measures can still be reversed.

TikTok does not agree to the restrictions. A spokeswoman assures that TikTok has given the US government many more guarantees in its proposals to ensure the safety of US users than other apps are ready.
