The investigation by the Dutch Data Protection Authority was launched to find out how the tax office handled the applicant’s personal data. It is one of the investigations into the surcharge affair in which thousands of parents are wrongly accused of defrauding with the care allowance. Many people had to repay (ten) thousands of euros and therefore got into trouble.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Finance has filed a complaint against the Tax Office for possible offences. There are two possible offences: professional discrimination and official misconduct. The latter ‘requires or receives a payment if the official knows that that payment is not due’.
After a long insistence of CDA MEP Omtzigt and SP MEP Leijten, more and more facts about the actions of the tax administration have come to light recently. The defrauded parents were promised compensation, and the scheme was also extended after criticism.
