China is planning sanctions against U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin, a government spokesman said. The measure follows the green light of the U.S. government for a large arms deal with Taiwan. This country is considered by Beijing to be a Chinese territory and not an independent state.
The US State Department last week approved a proposal to sell Taiwan an improvement package for its Patriot air defense systems worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
It was widely expected that this decision would cause China to bleed bad blood. China’s Foreign Ministry said the arms deal amounted to foreign interference in domestic affairs. The United States should therefore cut all military ties with Taiwan, a ministry spokesman said.
