The American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has to raise an amount of 2.5 billion dollars (about 2 billion euros) in order to mislead the American aviation authority FAA. The group and the U.S. Department of Justice reached an agreement on Thursday.
Boeing was suspected of misleading regulators while inspecting the 737 Max aircraft, causing two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. A total of 346 people were killed.
“The misleading statements, half-truths and omissions from Boeing employees have compromised the FAA’s ability to keep passengers safe,” said one of the prosecutors.
The amount includes $ 500 million for a fund to compensate family members and relatives of the victims of the 737 Max accidents. Almost $ 1.8 billion is also earmarked for compensation for Boeing customers who were unable to fly their 737 Max aircraft for a long time.
