The Twitter accounts of several prominent personalities and large companies have been hijacked by fraudsters for some time. Donations in bitcoins were sought on accounts of companies such as Apple and Uber and celebrities such as rapper Kanye West, US presidential candidate Joe Biden and billionaires Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Elon Musk (Tesla).
The messages, which were deleted, said that people had half an hour to transfer 1,000 dollars (over 876 euros) into bitcoins. They received 2,000 DOLLARS. It is unclear how many people were injured. By News Agency Reuters Public blockchain data shows that the alleged fraudsters have already received more than 100,000 DOLLARS, or about 87,000 euros in cryptocurrency. Blockchain is a collection protocol that is used, among other things, for virtual money.
According to Twitter, hackers have broken into employees who have access to the social media platform’s “internal system.” The burglars are said to have used this access to take control of a number of prominent verified accounts. Such accounts, used by celebrities, journalists, governments, and politicians, include Twitter checks of who the user is. “We are investigating what other malicious activities they may have carried out or what information they may have retrieved,” the company said in a statement about the hacks.
Twitter suspended a large number of accounts because of the attack and imposed restrictions on a large number of users. In a statement, the company said it would not fully restore access until it was secure. “Tough day for us on Twitter,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wrote in a tweet. “We all feel terrible that this has happened.”
Experts say this is the biggest Twitter hack ever. There is a lot of speculation about it on the internet: it could be an inside job, with the hackers getting help from a Twitter employee.
