Older union ANBO believes that generations should not compete against each other in corona control. In the AD, some members of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) campaigned on Monday to better protect vulnerable people, for example by having a limited number of permanent contacts.
“People at risk must of course be protected, for example older people who live in a nursing home. However, the vast majority of the elderly are vital, contribute to society and should not be forcibly isolated, ”the union explains.
Director Liane den Haan thinks that this puts a very large part of the Netherlands on the sidelines. “There are currently 3.2 million people over 65 years of age in the Netherlands, 80 percent of whom are not at risk. In fact, they are of great value to our society. Think of all the volunteers. I really don’t think it’s a good idea to put 2.5 million people in an artificial social bubble. “
She does not think it right to say that older people should be restricted in their freedom so that young people have more room to keep the economy going. “So let’s differentiate between the frail and the vital elderly and adjust the corona measures accordingly.”
